Effect of vesicular-arbuscular mycorrhizal infection on amino acid composition in roots of onion and white clover

Abstract
Vesicular-arbuscular (V A) mycorrhizal infection refers to symbiotic associations between vascular plants and fungi belonging to the order Glomales. The fungi absorb phosphorus from the soil solution and supply it to host cells via arbuscules. In return, the host plant provides its photosynthates as a source of carbohydrates to the fungi (Smith and Gianinazzi-Pearson 1988; Smith and Smith 1990; Saito et al. 1992). However the physiological mechanisms involved in the exchange of nutrients and photosynthates have not been well defined (Smith and Gianinazzi-Pearson 1988; Schwab et al. 1991).
