Idiopathic Hypoparathyroidism Associated with Hyperthyroidism

Abstract
An apparently unprecedented case of coexisting idiopathic hypoparathyroidism and hyperthyroidism in a 22-year-old woman has been reported, together with the results of laboratory studies establishing both diagnoses. The development of symptoms of hypocalcemia as the patient''s thyrotoxicosis was brought under medical control suggests that the presence of hypoparathyroidism may have been transiently masked by the increased mobilization of skeletal calcium observed in hyperthyroidism. Although pathologic confirmation was lacking, it is postulated that thyroid enlargement may have precipitated the hypoparathyroidism by the induction of parathyroid necrosis or parathyroiditis.
