Abstract
The movement of lactose-1-C14 from the lumen of ileum into the mucosal cells of the rat was studied. A solution containing 0.1 mM lactose and 20 uc lactose-1-C14 was injected into the lumen of the ligated ileum. At 4 hours after injecting C14-labeled lactose into the ligated segment, the ileum was resected, washed and fixed for microautoradiographic preparation; an adjacent section was taken and homogenized for chromato-graphic identification of the labeled material. The microautoradiogram showed that most of the radioactivity was localized in the striated border of the absorptive cell. Paper chromatographic analysis of the homogenized solution indicated that only lactose was present in the homo-genate. These data indicate that lactose can penetrate directly into intestinal mucosal cells before hydrolysis. Keywords
