Noninfectious granulomatous angiitis with a predilection for the nervous system

Abstract
Granulomatous alteration of the vessels of the central nervous system is described in 2 patients. In one, the process was limited to the brain; in the other, visceral involvement was also present, although to a less significant degree. Six other cases were found in the literature. In all these patients, predominant and, at times, exclusive involvement was found of the vessels of the nervous system by a granulomatous angiitis which involved both arteries and veins - -although the arterial lesions predominated. The process essentially consisted of a proliferation of various mesenchymal cells in the intima, the adventitia, or in all layers of the vessel wall. Giant cells of the Langhans or foreign-body types were prominent among these infiltrating cells.
