Intravenous Administration of Massive Dosages of Estrogen to the Human Subject; Blood Levels Attained

Abstract
Thirteen female and 9 male subjects were given a total of 67 intraven. infusions of from 100 to 400 mg. of conjugated natural estrogens dissolved in 200 cc. of normal saline. In the main, these infusions were well tolerated. Serum levels of estrogen as detd. by bioassay varying from 17.6 to 48 ug. were obtained and only negligible quantities of estrogen remained in the blood after 8 hrs. The feasibility of rapidly inducing a high serum estrogen level by intraven. infusion is demonstrated. The clinical usefulness of this form of estrogen therapy in carcinoma of the breast and prostate remains to be evaluated.
