Abstract
The spontaneous development of spiral waves in the Belousov–Zhabotinsky reaction in the wake of a simple reaction diffusion front is reported in a system for which the redox catalyst is immobilised on an ion-exchange membrane. The behaviour is explained in terms of the concept of vulnerability of the medium. Keywords
