A STUDY OF THE CIRCULATORY FAILURE AND SHOCK FOLLOWING TRAUMA TO THE HEALTHY, VIGOROUS ADRENALECTOMIZED DOG

Abstract
The shock and circulatory collapse induced by intestinal manipulation, and trauma to muscles of the healthy, vigorous adrenalectomized dog on maintenance doses of hormones, are not due to changes in serum Na, Cl or K and associated disturbances in the distribution of body water. Hemoconc, although usually present to some degree, is not an invariable accompaniment of shock and circulatory collapse in the type of animal used in these expts. Hypertonic saline given intraven. to the dog in profound shock, raises the arterial pressure to normal levels. The effect is temporary and the animal soon lapses into shock. Adrenal cortical hormone when administered in adequate amts. restores the collapsed circulation to normal. The marked pressor effect of the hormone is apparently due to its regulatory control of capillary tone.
