THE EFFECT OF 2-DEOXY-D-GLUCOSE INFUSIONS ON LIPID AND CARBOHYDRATE METABOLISM IN MAN*

Abstract
Eleven subjects were studied following the infusion of 2-deoxy-D-glucose. Serum glucose and free fatty acid levels were measured. The modifying effect of insulin, glucose, fructose and lactate infusion upon the response of the 2-deoxy-D-glucose was observed. Sharp rises in free fatty acid and plasma glucose levels were observed following the infusion of 2-deoxy-D-glucose. Urinary excretion of epinephrine and norepinephrine also rose, and suggested that the hypoglycemia effected by the blocking of glucose entry into the cell resulted in activation of the adrenal medulla, which may be the mediating mechanism of the free fatty acid rise.
