Investigations of two trigonal (T1 and T2) Gd3+ ESR centers in treated alkaline-earth-fluoride crystals

Abstract
A detailed investigation has been made of the two trigonal Gd3+ ESR centers (T1 and T2) in alkaline-earth-fluoride (CaF2, SrF2, and BaF2) crystals treated with water vapor at high temperatures. We have observed both the T1 and T2 centers in all three fluoride crystals. Partially resolved superhyperfine structures have been detected for the first time for the T1 and T2 centers. It is established that the charge-compensation structures of the T1 and T2 trigonal Gd3+ centers are associated with the Gd3+ -F O42 and Gd3+ -F7 O2 configurations, respectively.
