Succinic Dehydrogenase Activity of the Heart, Kidneys and Liver in Experimental Hypertensive Rats (Goldblatt Type)

Abstract
In rats made hypertensive by the partial ligation of the left renal artery, the ipsolateral kidney shows early, marked losses in succinic dehydrogenase activity (method of Kun and Abood). The contralateral hypertrophied kidney and the liver show no such alterations. However, in many enlarged hearts of the hypertensive animals a moderate decrease in activity was observed. These findings present additional evidence of a decrease in activity of various enzymes in the tissues of hypertensive animals and, in particular, a disturbance of the cellular oxidation system in the hypodynamic kidney and the overworked heart in hypertension of the Goldblatt type.
