Abstract
To the Editor: The editorial, "Hypoxic Cell Radiosensitizers,"1 emphasized the need to develop more efficient but less toxic electron-affinic drugs as radiosensitizers. However, whereas metronidazole is indeed electron affinic as compared to a biomolecule such as carbon dioxide, this is a relative term, and the sensitizing action of the compound can be more closely associated with its constituent nitro group.2 , 3 Although other nitro compounds are under investigation we believe that the use of drugs of higher electron affinity of this type will carry an increased risk of sensitizing normal tissues.
