The Effect of Hormonal Modification on Prostatic Morphology

Abstract
The effects of estrogen and androgen, alone and in combination, on growth and histologic pattern of the prostate was studied in mature, male albino rats of the Sprague-Dawley strain. The drugs were administered to intact rats as well as to rats after hypophysectomy, adrenalectomy, or castration. The results suggest that the two hormones act as independent antagonists. Normal prostatic morphology is maintained following removal of the one or another of the glands and administration of estrogen and androgen in a ratio of 2:1.
