Abstract
Absolute cross sections for carbon -shell x-ray production are measured and compared for the case of 0.1-1-MeV protons incident on thin solid targets (carbon foils) and a gaseous target (methane). These x-ray results combined with Auger measurements provide a fluorescence yield which is independent of the proton energy.
