EFFECT OF RESECTION OF ANTRUM OF STOMACH ON GASTRIC SECRETION IN PAVLOV POUCH DOGS

Abstract
Gastric secretion from Pavlov and Heidenhain pouch dogs was collected quantitatively by inserting nylon plastic cannulas in the pouch sealed with omentum. In 11 animals, the 24-hr. output of free HC1 was reduced by resection of the pyloric antrum. Antrum resection caused a greater proportional reduction in HC1 output in animals with Heidenhain pouches (93%) than in Pavlov pouches (74%). Resection of less than 2/3 of the antrum had no effect on the pouch secretion. Removal of 90% of the antrum in one case caused a marked decrease in secretion from the pouch, and a still further reduction occurred when the small antrum remnant was removed. Removal of the entire antrum produced a variable and probably insignificant effect on the gastric secretory response to a standard dose of histamine.
