Abstract
The berberine-containing rhizome of C. japonica is prescribed in Chinese medicine for its antiinflammatory, analgesic, sedative, antidotal, hemostatic and gastrointestinal effects. The fertile chick egg method showed the active antiinflammatory constituents to be berberine, coptisine, jateorrhizine and palmatine. The activity of berberine was confirmed by the cotton-pellet, croton oil-granuloma and punch methods in rats. Keywords
