Intermediate Reactions in Blood Coagulation

Abstract
An intermediate reaction in blood coagulation that involves thrombo-plastin prior to the conversion of prothrombin to thrombin is termed the "cothromboplastin reaction." Thromboplastin from platelets as well as that from tissues undergoes this reaction. The increased thromboplastic activity resulting from this reaction is associated with sedimentable platelet material. Previous reaction with platelets is a possible explanation for the greater initial cothromboplastic activity of serum compared to plasma.
