Abstract
The ability of 24 elderly subjects (mean age 82.1 years) to absorb thiamine was investigated using 3 oral doses 1.0 mg, 5.0 mg and 20.0 mg. The results were compared with those in 21 younger subject (mean age 48.9 years) but no evidence of impaired absorption was found. No inevitable decline with age in the ability of the intestine to absorb vitamin B1 seems to occur and deficiency in most elderly people probably need not arise provided they are receiving an adequate diet. Keywords
