Abstract
Twenty-one cases of cir-cumscribed myxedema of the legs were related clinically to the thyrotropin influence of connective tissue. In a thyrotropin stimulated animal as caused by antithyroid drugs, radiation of the thyroid, or a thyrotoxic patient treated by thyroidectomy, edema results due to a venous stasis and a release of excessive amounts of hyaluronic acid from the mast cells. A binding of edema water follows resulting in a mucinous edema (myxedema), which lasts as long as the hormonal influences. Keywords
