Abstract
A new method for calculating equilibrium charge states for ions moving in a uniform electron gas is proposed. These charge states are obtained in terms of the processes of capture and loss for the level bound to the ion, and these processes are calculated by means of usual many-body techniques. Our method has been applied to H and He, the results showing good agreement with the available experimental evidence. Keywords
