Biochemical Studies on Streptolysin S Formation*

Abstract
Separation of intracellular streptolysin S (ICH-S) and intracellular streptolysin O (ICH-O) contained in the streptococcal extract were achieved by gel filtration through Sephadex G-200. ICH-S was a large complex nondiffusible into the dextran gel and appeared in earlier fractions, while extracellular sRNA-SL was retarded and appeared in the rear fractions. ICH-O was similar to extracellular streptolysin O in respect of biological properties as well as of the gel filtration behaviors. The previous conclusion that RNA-SLS was formed by transferring the hemolytic component of ICH-S to AF, was reconfirmed by the gel filtration experiments.
