Abstract
The formation of malic dehydrogenase appears to be under regulatory control. Since the specific activity of the enzyme is less when the cells are grown in sucrose, it appears that the synthesis of enzyme was controlled by sucrose or glucose (product of sucrose). The results indicate that the rapid decrease in the specific activity of malic dehydrogenase upon transfer of acetate grown cells to sucrose medium is not only due to repression but also may be due to the destruction or inhibition of the enzyme by sucrose or a product of sucrose.
