Studies in onchocerciasis

Abstract
Onchocercal dermatitis as found in Africa is more frequently confined to the trunk region of the body than is the case in the better known American type of the disease. It is suggested that some strains of Onchocerca volvulus may be dermotropic and that their metabolites may be the cause of the pruritis and lesions seen in Africa. The greater frequency of the disease among the poorer class of natives is believed to be due to in-suffucient clothing protection against Simulium bites, and not to malnutrition. The varying aspects of onchocerciasis are mentioned and it is pointed out that the dermotropic symptoms predominate in e. Nigeria.
