Abstract
It was demonstrated that quinine and quinidine will antagonize the pressor effects of epinephrine and of splanchnic nerve stimulation in dogs, thus confirming observations recorded in the earlier literature. This sympatholytic effect occurs with oral as well as intraven. admn. of the alkaloids and at plasma concns. below the range of marked toxicity. The epinephrine antagonism was demonstrated in unanesthetized dogs. It is felt that the depressor effect of the cinchona alkaloids on the circulation, especially noted on intraven. injn., is caused primarily by peripheral vasodilatation. Keywords
