Abstract
Twenty-five amino acids were tested for suitability as N sources for the growth of the H37Rv strain of M. tuberculosis var. hominis by incorporating them in various concns. into 3 different basal media: (1) modified Proskauer and Beck (P and B) medium, (2) modified P and B medium from which asparagin had been omitted, (3) P and B medium free of both asparagin and Mg citrate. In (3) only L-asparagin, L-glutamic acid, and DL-aspartic acid serve as good stimulants to growth, whereas L (-)-histidine, L-proline, and possibly DL-alanine stimulate growth to a lesser degree. Growth of the tubercle bacilli in the basal medium deficient only in asparagin is just as rapid as growth in the same medium to which an adequate N source is added. Keywords
