Teaching Planning Skills in the Classroom: The Development of an Integrated Model

Abstract
THE PAPER deals briefly with several problems confronted by researchers keen to adapt the methods and findings of laboratory‐based cognitive instruction to mainstream classes. In general, cognitive curricula have not won the support of classroom teachers and have shown only minor successes in improving students’ academic behaviour. The conceptual foundation for one intervention, Process‐based Instruction (PBI), is given together with a description of the way in which PBI has been integrated into regular primary school curriculum activities. A longitudinal study examining the efficacy of PBI is proceeding and preliminary data are indicative of positive effects on students’ academic performance.
