Abstract
Educational research involves social values. It contains lines of reasoning established through discourse within a scientific community and within larger historical and cultural structures. The values affirmed in research have possible political functions. Theories and methods not only describe, but also give direction to the way that social events are to be challenged. The dispositional character of research is often ignored in discussions of social science. Yet the increasing use of research perspectives to define the events of our daily lives makes it imperative that the social values and beliefs underlying inquiry in social education be continually scrutinized. Keywords
