Abstract
The purpose of the article is to discuss factors that foster the development of young voluntary readers. Emphasis is placed upon a review of empirical studies which describe home and school characteristics that encourage voluntary reading. The importance of providing a literacy rich environment in the classroom and of promoting voluntary reading as a regular part of the reading instructional program are emphasized.Keywords
