ALDOSTERONE SECRETION AND METABOLISM IN NORMAL MEN AND WOMEN AND IN PREGNANCY

Abstract
Secretion rate of aldosterone was investigated in terms of excretion of free aldosterone and conjugated aldosterone. Excretion of both aldosterone and the 3-oxo 4-ene conjugate were considerably increased in some but not all of the pregnant women, although there was decreased excretion of the glucuronide conjugate. It appears possible that the increase in the secretion rate of aldosterone, the decrease in the sensitivity of the kidney to the action of aldosterone, the lowered metabolism of cortisol and the accompanying stimulation of cortisol secretion to maintain the raised blood concentrations are all correlated. There was a correlation between secretion rate of aldosterone and urinary pregnanediol and free cortisol for the 6 pregnant women studied.
