Abstract
Twelve of 15 azotemic individuals tested were found to have impaired glucose metabolism as manifested by abnormal glucose tolerance test without fasting hyperglycemia. This metabolic abnormality was found to be resistant to insulin but sensitive to tolbutamide. The use of intravenous tolbutamide provides a means of differentiating azotemic pseudodiabetic patients from patients with true diabetes and azotemia, a point of clinical importance. A number of factors possible responsible for this metabolic pattern are discussed and an hypothesis formulated which agrees with available data. Keywords
