To the Editor: I was pleased to see the article on epiglottitis in adults in the May 1 issue,* and would like to draw attention to another complication of this affliction — namely, noncardiac pulmonary edema.A 46-year-old male high-school teacher was admitted to a hospital with acute dyspnea and severe stridor. He had had a sore throat and fever for a few days, but the acute change had occurred shortly before admission. The problem was recognized quickly, and an emergency tracheostomy performed. When the trachea was opened, pink frothy fluid came forth, indicative of pulmonary edema, but the patient . . .
