A New Formula Score

Abstract
A new formula for the correction for chance success was advanced and investigated, the mathematical solution of which has the property of equating the scores of fast and slow examinees of equal competence. On an 80-item test of English vocabulary, examinees informed of this new scoring system—which encourages the use of partial knowledge while discouraging random guessing—were found to omit unknown items more frequently than those following the directions of the three most commonly used scoring systems. It was also found that the new scores were more reliable than the others, but only for difficult tests.
