RENAL HEMODYNAMICS, SODIUM AND WATER EXCRETION IN SUPINE EXERCISING NORMAL AND CARDIAC PATIENTS 1

Abstract
Renal plasma flow, glomerular filtration rate (GFR), Na and water excretion were measured in 15 normal and 11 cardiac subjects before, during, and after exercise in the supine position. No consistent change in or correlation of Na excretion and GFR occurred in normal patients or cardiac patients with mild failure. In the more severe cardiac subjects, renal plasma flow, GFR and Na excretion fell significantly in every case during exercise. It is suggested that the previously reported diminution in Na excretion in exercising cardiac subjects without concomitant reduction in GFR was a postural effect.
