Abstract
Antibodies to Toxoplasma gondii were studied by the Sabin-Feldman dye test. In 137 dogs, 45.3% had antibodies (all titers); 29.9% had low titers ( 1:16). No parasites were isolated by inoculation of laboratory mice with liver, spleen and brain from all dogs in this series. A second series of 663 dogs was screened by the dye test to select animals with titers of 1:16 or higher. Of the 16.0% which showed antibodies at these levels, 54 dogs were further tested by inoculation of brain tissues into mice. Toxoplasma infections thus were detected in 2 dogs with antibody titers of 1:256 and 1:1024. Among the 800 dogs tested, antibodies were equally frequent in males and females. Low titers ( < 1:16) were significantly more prevalent in rural dogs than in urban dogs. Adults showed significantly more high titers ( > 1:16) than did juveniles. Keywords
