Abstract
A numerical study of field emission from tungsten covered with germanium layers of atomic thickness is given, based on a one dimensional pseudopotential model for the adsorbed atoms. As a result a theory is proposed which explains at a semiquantitative level both the reduction in the total current, and the appearance of a second peak in the total energy distribution of the field emitted electrons. The observed variation of the field emission characteristics with the thickness of the adsorbed germanium is also explained. Keywords
