Abstract
Ether-insoluble lipids were isolated from 2 kg. of stromas of lyophilized horse red cells. 2 main fractions were studied: (1) a phospholipid which was identified as palmityl-sphingomyelin; (2) a glycolipid resembling ganglioside. The glycolipid was designated as hematoside with the molecular formula given as C63H118O20N2.Structurally, it was found to contain lignoceric acid, sphingosine, galactose, and "prehemataminic acid" in ratios of 1:1:2:1. "prehemataminic acid" is actually the aldehyde of a N-containing polyhydroxycarboxylic acid which is closely related to neuraminic acid forming part of the molecule of ganglioside. This publication has 6 references indexed in Scilit:
