Abstract
A modified gravity model for predicting regional recreation travel is constructed and tested on data describing ski trips in California. Several key issues in recreation modeling are addressed including the measurement of alternative recreation opportunities, the appropriate specification of the distance-decay function, the role of size and quality characteristics of recreation facilities in attracting visitors, the appropriate specification of the population size variable and the choice of log-linear versus nonlinear least-squares procedures for estimating gravity model parameters. Keywords
