Abstract
The purpose of this paper is to examine factors that may influence the direction of Early Childhood Special Education by the year 2000. The authors Identified factors that are internal to early childhood special education and special education in general, as well as factors external to the field. On the basis of their analysis, they offer predictions about least restrictive environment options. transdisciplinary team models, empirical bases for family involvement "translative" research, the impact of technology, the number of children needing services, the availability of resources, and the relationship of early childhood special education to regular education. They also discuss ways in which early childhood special educators may influence their future.Keywords
