Abstract
Cognitive abilities and leadership play an important part in determining the success of athletic teams. This paper reviews a theory that indicates the specific conditions under which such cognitive resources as the leader's intellectual abilities, technical competence and experience contribute to effective team performance. A small study of high school basketball teams suggests that cognitive resource theory is applicable to sports. Implications of results for the management of stress in interpersonal relations between coaches and players, and for selection and training of team leaders are discussed. Keywords
