Abstract
Measurements were made of the mean QO2 of isolated frog gastric mucosa before histamine stimulation and of the mean QHCl and QO2 during the secretory period. Figures are given for the changes during secretion of the p.d., resistance and latent electric power of a representative mucosa, with corresponding OQO2 and QHCl values. The energy required for the production of gastric HC1 is compared with the energy available from metabolism. If the increase in the rate of respiration of the mucosa provides the power for secretion, the efficiency of the secretory process approaches 100%. Perhaps energy is also available for secretion from the basal metabolic energy, either as a result of the change in latent electric power or otherwise. Mammalian oxyntic cells are among the most active cells in the body. Keywords
