Abstract
Knowledge of the processes involved in learning to read and write is accumulating rapidly. This review focuses upon symbolic play as a vehicle for developing literacy in young children. Theoretical and empirical research suggests that engaging children in symbolic play while incorporating literacy content into such play can have a positive influence on early literacy development. Teachers take note! Knowledge of the role of play behavior in the classroom is a must. —JRCKeywords
