Fat Embolization Prophylaxis

Abstract
Eighty-nine patients with multiple system injuries, including fractures of the pelvis, femur, or tibia, were observed. Serum determinations of cholesterol, free fatty acids, and total lipids showed a decrease of each of these substances in the blood, following institution of hypertonic glucose therapy. The possible mechanisms of actions on the triglyceride level, liver function, and secretion of norepinephrine and cortisone were determined. In the series of patients with multiple system injuries, the prophylactic treatment with intravenous administration of hypertonic glucose has eliminated fat embolization as a complication.This publication has 2 references indexed in Scilit:
