Abstract
Salmine, pyruvate, insulin and lactalysate or its derivatives will in part replace the serum and embryo extract requirements of avian cell cultures. Addition of serum, however, was necessary for growth comparable to that attained in the basal medium containing both serum and embryo extract Lactalysate or its derivatives and embryo extract not only served to stimulate growth but overcame a severe toxic effect of serum. These properties of lactalysate were confined largely to the non-dialyzable portion. The activity of acid hydrolysates of the lactalysate residue demonstrated that a proteose or peptone was not responsible for these activities. Keywords
