Abstract
A critical appraisal is presented of results of the above types of therapy in 7 cases of preado-lescent eunuchoidism. It had been previously shown that implantation of small pellets of methyl testosterone introduced through a large bore needle in doses of 100 to 200 mg. were effective for 6 wks. This amt. was only 1/6 of that required parenterally. Larger implants of 600-800 mg. required a minor surgical operation, and the effect usually was not prolonged in proportion to the size of the dose. 1/4 to 1/2 of the larger implants had been rendered inactive by the formation of a surrounding connective tissue capsule. Methyl testosterone orally is surprisingly effective. The total dose required is 2-4 times the intramuscular dose. It is simple, convenient, and possibly the most economical form of therapy. The initial oral dose is 40 to 75 mg. daily; the maintenance dose is 10-30 mg. daily. Oral therapy alone produces gain in wt., elevation of the basal metabolic rate, growth of the external genitalia and prostate, more vigorous growth of sexual hair, deepening of the voice, increased libido and frequency of erections, and increased strength, endurance and mental and emotional animation.
