Survival of Blood Platelets Labeled with Chromium5112

Abstract
A standardized pro-cedure was developed to label human platelets in vitro with Na2 Cr51O4. The technical problems relating to temperature, Cr51 concentration and effects of plasma and saline media are evaluated. Cr51 labeled platelets live 9 to 11 days when transfused into normal human recipients. The blood elements in the recipient are not labeled by the infused Cr51 attached to the platelet membrane. The radioactivity of the transfused platelets declines in a linear fashion to indicate that the in vitro preparation has not altered platelet viability.
