Evidence for structural inhomogeneity in liquid In2Te3

Abstract
The temperature dependence of both electronic properties and total structure factor of liquid In2Te3 is discussed in terms of an inhomogeneous liquid model. All available data can be consistently explained using the volume fraction of the metallic region determined from the Knight shift. The results indicate that liquid In2Te3 consists of two kinds of well-defined domains which have the same chemical composition (In2Te3) but difference structures. From magnetic susceptibility measurements it is inferred that at sufficiently high temperature (>or=1100 degrees C) the molecular form In2Te becomes stable rather than In2Te3. A possible mechanism for this phenomenon is discussed from the viewpoint of valence fluctuations of In ions.Keywords
