Abstract
Uninhibited oestrogen secretion following lesions of the ventral anterior hypothalamus brings about an increase in pituitary weight as well as cytologicai changes similar to those observed after prolonged oestradiol treatment.[long dash]It is assumed that pituitary hypertrophy and the characteristic cytologicai changes are the results of a direct action of oestrogen on the adeno-hypophysis, whereas inhibition of FSH-secretion is an indirect effect, mediated by the hypothalamus.[long dash]Hypophyseal gonadotrophic activity can not be assessed by pituitary cytology alone without taking into account the state of the gonads and the accessory reproductive organs. Keywords
