METABOLIC STUDIES WITH CORTISONE

Abstract
Three patients with rheumatoid arthritis were given 200 mg. of cortisone (50 mg. 4 times daily intramusc.) and their metabolic balances estimated from urinary excretion of Na, Cl, H2O, N, Ca, P, uric acid, creatinine, 17-ketosteroids. Extracellular fluid volume was estimated from changes in Cl. Na, Cl, and H2O were retained under the influence of cortisone, while K, N, Ca, P uric acid, reducing substances and creatine were excreted in increased quantity. Weight gain occurred, partly because of H2O retention, and partly, presumably, because of increased fat deposition. Blood eosinophiles were reduced, whereas total white count and fasting blood glucose were increased.
