Abstract
Micrococcus cryophilus has been descr. by DeLamater as a unicellular coccus with a large central nucleus dividing by a typical mitotic process. Comparison of cell wall and nuclear stained prepns. shows that, at all stages, each coccus has 2 or, more frequently, 4 cells, separated by well-marked cross walls. The nuclei of these component cells have been mistaken for the chromosomes of a larger mitotic system. "Mitotic figures" similar to those produced by DeLamater''s technique of dehydration in freezing alcohol can be produced by treatment with concn. solvents at temps. up to and including the boiling point.
