Artificial Daylight Sources

Abstract
Many attempts have been made to produce artificial lighting equivalent to natural daylight for the purposes of visual colour work, the success of the new sources varying with the availability of lamps (incandescent, fluorescent and gas discharge) and with the accuracy of measurements on sunlight and daylight. Standardisation began with the definition of CIE Illuminants A, B and C, and as a result of much recent measurement, standard daylight distributions have lately been proposed. British Standard Specifications adopt some of these, and a fluorescent tube is now made to conform to the 6500°K distribution. The measurement of colour rendering of such sources is discussed, and numerous spectral distribution curves given for standard sources, equivalent black bodies and fluorescent tubes made to simulate various phases of daylight.
