Abstract
A comparison was made of the toxicities of the N-methyl- and N,N-dimethylcarbamates of eight active aryl groups. In all cases the N-methyl carbamates were superior in toxicity to the house fly (Musca domestica L.), mosquito (Culex pipiens quinquefasciatus Say) larva and salt-marsh caterpillar (Estigmene acrea (Drury)) larva. The carbamates were chosen to illustrate insecticidal specificity and it was found that this was determined by the nature of the aryl-group. There was an approximately linear relationship between the logarithm of toxicity to the house fly and cholinesterase inhibition. Keywords
